Why is Japanese porn so popular?

Some people have called Japanese porn an “anti-Japanese” product, a term coined by Japanese feminist group Arakawa Shimbun that has become a catch-all for the genre.

In its defence, Japanese porn has a long history in Japan, dating back to the mid-19th century when Japanese men were forced to watch and participate in Western-style pornography, but it’s also become a lucrative industry.

The aim is to bring the “international” Japanese porn industry to the west, which has traditionally been dominated by Westerners.

It includes an interview with a porn director who describes how his Japanese clients ask him about his country, which he replies “is one of the few countries that has a lot of culture”.

Animate was founded in 1999 and it was the first to make a concerted effort to appeal to American audiences in the 1990s.

The Japanese company is now the largest Japanese porn company and, despite the huge amount of Japanese pornography available online, it was founded by a woman.

“It’s a Japanese company, so we have to make it into an international company,” Animate co-founder Yoshikazu Ishikawa told Al Jazeera.
